100 years ago: Largest passenger engine in the world to pass through town

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 10, 1909: The largest passenger engine in the world will pass through Lawrence either Thursday or Friday. Weighing, with the tender, 300 tons, it has the hauling power one-half greater than the most powerful passenger locomotive now in use. It is known as the great Santa Fe mountain-climber. . . . The Central Hotel property owned by Bertha Apitz was sold yesterday to Joseph Baer for $10,000. The hotel is at the corner of Vermont and Warren streets and is one of the most valuable sites in Lawrence. . . . Local travelers this morning noted a car upset in the middle of the road east of town. Under the auto lay the mangled body of A.G. Geshurst of Kansas City. He was alone and there were no known witnesses to the accident. The cause is unknown. . . . Three suspects have been arrested for the robbery of the Morris Second Hand Store but evidence is scarce and there is doubt police can hold them very long. . . . An unidentified KU student was badly wounded last night by a robber who jumped him in the South Park area and shot him as he fled. There have been no arrests.
