100 years ago: Grape consumption up in Lawrence

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 9, 1909: Mr. and Mrs. Bert Kennedy returned home today from Seneca where they had been visiting since the Nebraska football game at Lincoln. Coach Kennedy of the KU team had been feeling ill but says he is much better now and is eager to get his uneaten team ready for the visit by Iowa on Nov. 20. . . . Burglars entering the second-hand store of William Morris at 615 Mass. last night secured a large number of gold watches and revolvers. The crime occurred right after midnight soon after police had made a routine check of the area. . . . A study is being made of the poor residents of town in an effort to get them more aid not just for the holidays but for the year around. The goal is to raise money handled through a single agency. . . . On account of the shortage of other kinds of fruit, Lawrence people have been consuming astonishing amounts of grapes during the past month. The Helm Commission Co. today got in their fourth complete car load of grapes for local consumption. Shipments are coming in from all over the county, particularly Michigan and New York.
