100 years ago: Lawrence High continues winning streak

From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 8, 1909: Lawrence High came one game nearer to an ever-victorious football season yesterday by defeating Ottawa High 11-0 on McCook Field. The game was poor compared to other efforts by Lawrence but was still a victory needed for Lawrence to claim the state title, which at this point seems a certainty. . . . Edmund Ross, professor of sociology at Wisconsin, yesterday rapped modern churches for their commercialization and dominance by the rich during a talk to students at the university. He said he detests the current “business psychology” of many churches. . . . Mrs. John Jacob Astor, society leader, was granted an absolute divorce from her husband today in a New York court. The papers were ordered sealed but it is reported Mrs. Astor will get a lump sum of $10 million in alimony. She is to have custody of the daughter while the son remains with the father. . . . Sam Nite, the KU student who killed his father at Garden City last winter in defense of his mother and sister, is to return to his university work here. The state supreme court has freed him and he is to be welcomed back here by freinds. He plans to graduate this spring.
