Yes, Haskell Indian Nations University still has a football team.
The Fightin’ Indians, idle the last two Saturdays, will entertain Southwestern Assembles of God U. at 2 p.m. today at Haskell Stadium.
Meanwhile, Baker University will try to stretch its win streak to four when it travels to Springfield, Mo., for a 1:30 p.m. contest against Evangel.
For Haskell, quarterback Dwayne Butler, out for five weeks because of a knee injury, will be back under center, and H-back Quentin Haynes is likely to return to duty after breaking a collarbone in the third week of the season.
“He’s probable,” HINU coach Eric Brock said of Haynes. “He’s been cleared to play, and he’ll give it a go.”
Haskell (3-5) will be trying to snap a three-game losing streak against a SAGU team that snapped a seven-game skid last week by clipping Texas College, 28-20.
“They’re a scary 1-7 team,” Brock said.
Last year in Waxahachie, Texas, SAGU pasted the Indians, 66-14, but Haskell edged the Lions, 26-24, two years ago at Haskell Stadium.
Haskell and SAGU have met every year since the Indians became a member of the NAIA in 2000. HINU owns a 5-4 edge in the series.
Baker (5-3) has won five of its last six. All three losses have been to NAIA ranked teams. Evangel (2-6) will be playing its second game since coach Scott Metcalf announced he would leave at the end of the season.
Evangel toppled Avila, 27-19, last week while Baker was tripping winless William Jewell, 26-6.
Both Haskell and Baker will conclude their seasons at home a week from today, HINU against Peru State and BU against Central Methodist.
