From the Lawrence Daily World for Nov. 7, 1909: A great honor was conferred upon university chancellor Frank Strong yesterday when he was elected president of the state teachers organization. He was chosen at a local meeting of more than 3,000 teachers and it is a good indication of his popularity and high standing with teachers. . . . Harley Davidson, a reserve tackle on the university football team, misunderstood when the team was leaving for Nebraska and missed the trip. He was five minutes late and tried to get another train but could not and was heart-broken because he missed the victory. He is one of the team’s best substitutes. . . . Judge C.A. Smart has sentenced Aunt Jane Williams, the notorious jointist and liquor dealer, to 90 days in the county jail and she will be fined $200. With the ex-queen, now old and broken, standing before him, Judge Smart delivered a ringing temperance lecture, strongly condemning the woman who has made selling liquor a life profession and who has become notorious throughout the state for her vending of liquor to students. It was considered a very harsh sentence.
