Event marks 20 years of Eastern bloc freedom

A day-long Velvet Revolution party is scheduled for Saturday in Lawrence to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the end of Soviet-style rule in Central Europe.

It is sponsored by the KU Center for Russian, East European and Eurasian Studies, together with other organizations, and is open to KU alumni and the Lawrence and Kansas City communities.

The day’s events feature a Central European art exhibit, roundtable presentations, a luncheon with the Slovak ambassador to the United States and the deputy chief of mission at the Czech Embassy, and a play reading.

Participants may register for a $25 fee by visiting www.crees.ku.edu, and clicking on the Velvet Revolution Party link, or by calling Bart Redford, assistant CREES director, at 864-4248.
