25 years ago: Change of venue request for murder trial denied

The trial of a 19-year-old Lawrence man, Donald Alexander, charged with first-degree murder, rape and robbery in the death of Marguerite Vinyard, 80, was to stay in Lawrence. The defense had asked for a change of venue. Judge Mike Malone denied the shift.

India Gandhi, slain prime minister of India, was buried in New Delhi as anti-Sikh rioting cotinued and the death toll surpassed 1,000. Sikh bodyguards were suspected of figuring in the killing. Her son, Rajiv, immediately was elevated to the top job and was getting heavy criticism for the rioting and fatal violence.

Election day was near and many were glad to see its end as the Reagan-Mondale presidential bickering continued. Local attention was focused on only about three contests.
