Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Among major road projects in the area this week:

Lawrence

• Access and exit ramps for traffic headed west at the East Lawrence interchange on the Kansas Turnpike — Exit 204, across from the I-70 Business Center in North Lawrence — are closed for construction. Ramps for traffic heading east, toward the Kansas City area, remain open.

• City crews are scheduled to fill cracks this week on 19th Street, from Massachusetts Street to Haskell Avenue; 11th Street, east from Massachusetts; and Wakarusa Drive, from Sixth Street to Clinton Parkway. Such work will close several hundred feet of a single lane at a time.

• Wakarusa Drive north of Sixth Street is reduced to one lane for construction related to Bauer Farms.

• Drivers may encounter brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• Traffic continues to be limited along streets adjacent to the construction site for The Oread, near the northern end of Kansas University’s main campus.

• Work on steam tunnels at Kansas University will close sections of three streets beginning Monday: Mississippi Street, from Jayhawk Boulevard to Memorial Drive, through Aug. 10; Sunflower Drive, from a loading dock at Watson Library to a parking lot at the main Facilities Operations building, through Aug. 10; and Wescoe Drive, beginning at Sunflower Drive and extending west behind Stauffer-Flint Hall, until June 15.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth Street, near Queens Road, is closed to accommodate street widening.
