A look at Coastal Carolina

No. 2 seed (46-14, won Big South Conference championship)

Coach: Gary Gilmore, 14th season

Ranking: No. 15

Scouting report: Based on numbers, it’s hard to find an obvious weakness in this Coastal Carolina team. The Chanticleers’ top three starting pitchers have combined to go 26-3 this spring, and two — Nick McCully and Anthony Meo — had ERAs below 3. The Chanticleers aren’t too shabby offensively, either. Four players have recorded 10 or more home runs this season, led by standout first baseman David Anderson, who is first on the team in home runs (20) and RBIs (79).

If there’s one knock on Coastal Carolina, it’s competition level. So far this season, the team has played just one game against a Top-25 opponent.

Recent history: The Chanticleers have won 10 Big South Conference tournament titles, including the past three. In 2008, Coastal Carolina hosted the NCAA Conway Regional, winning the bracket to move on to a super regional for the first time in school history.
