From the Lawrence Daily World for May 28, 1909: “There are at least 500 happy school boys and girls today since the high school closed at noon for three months of summer vacation. Final papers are being graded and the list of graduates will be released as soon as possible. … A national speaker at a religious convention said all ministers should have autos to do their work. Many say they and their churches cannot afford such a ‘luxury’ … The light earthquake that frightened some in the Mississippi Valley yesterday was also felt by some in Baldwin. The shock was registered on the delicate instruments at the government observatory in the city but no damage of note was done.”
