Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Soon after Memorial Day travels wind down, the Kansas Turnpike Authority will crank up yet another traffic-disrupting construction project.

And it’s only the beginning.

Come 7 a.m. Wednesday, crews will close the ramps for westbound traffic at the turnpike’s East Lawrence interchange, which is Exit 204.

Both ramps, which are along the north side of the turnpike, will be closed for two weeks. That will force drivers who are coming into Lawrence from the Kansas City area or leaving town to head toward Topeka to find alternate routes, likely by entering or exiting the turnpike at the already rebuilt West Lawrence interchange, which is Exit 202.

The upcoming work is necessary to prepare Exit 204 for later this year, when all turnpike traffic passing through Lawrence will be redirected onto a new Kansas River bridge so that the existing bridges can be removed and a new one built in their place.

The entire East Lawrence interchange is scheduled to be closed for an eight-month reconstruction project, set to begin in the spring of 2010.

Among other road projects scheduled for the area this week:

Lawrence

• City crews are scheduled to fill cracks this week on sections of North Second Street, Lakeview Road and the downtown area. Specifically: Massachusetts Street, 6 a.m. to 8 a.m. Tuesday; Eighth Street, Tuesday; and Kentucky Street, Tuesday. Such work will close several hundred feet of a single lane at a time.

• Wakarusa Drive, north of Sixth Street, is reduced to one lane for construction related to Bauer Farms.

• Work to replace roadside concrete will close the one lane for traffic headed east on Ninth Street at Mississippi Street and at Louisiana Street. Mississippi and Louisiana also are slated to be closed at Ninth Street as concrete work is taking place.

• Drivers should expect lane closures and delays during working hours as crews remove pavement and place new surfaces on: Glenview Drive, from Deerfield Lane to Creekwood Drive; Deerfield Lane; Lance Court; Tomahawk Drive, from Kasold Drive to Longhorn Drive; Saddlehorn Drive, from Wagon Wheel Road to Ranger Drive; and Moccasin Drive.

• Drivers may encounter brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• Traffic continues to be limited along streets adjacent to the construction site for The Oread, near the northern end of Kansas University’s main campus.

• Work on steam tunnels at Kansas University will close sections of three streets beginning Monday: Mississippi Street, from Jayhawk Boulevard to Memorial Drive, through Aug. 10; Sunflower Drive, from a loading dock at Watson Library to a parking lot at the main Facilities Operations building, through Aug. 10; and Wescoe Drive, beginning at Sunflower Drive and extending west behind Stauffer-Flint Hall, until June 15.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth Street, near Queens Road, is closed to accommodate street widening.

• The left lane for drivers heading west on Interstate 70 will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday from First Street to Adams/Branner Trafficway in Topeka, for concrete repair survey work.

• The ramp from northbound Interstate 635 to eastbound I-70, and the right two lanes of eastbound I-70 over the 38th Street bridge, will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday for pavement repairs in Wyandotte County.

• The right lane will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday on the entrance ramp from 110th Street to westbound Interstate 70 in Johnson County, for pavement repairs.

U.S. Highway 24

U.S. Highway 24-40

• Drivers on U.S. Highway 24-40, which is State Avenue, will face intermittent lane closures between 118th and 142nd streets in Wyandotte County, as crews begin around-the-clock work on pavement repairs at 7 p.m. Monday. Work is set to be done late Friday.

• The interchange of State Avenue and Kansas Highway 7 is set to have intermittent ramp closures from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Kansas Highway 7

• Traffic on K-7 remains limited to one lane in each direction from 55th Street/ Johnson Drive to Shawnee Mission Parkway, in Johnson County, for road-construction work. The lane restrictions are expected to last into late June.
