Dog in fire bites rescuer

A fire that broke out in the bedroom of a mobile home in the 3300 block of Iowa Street caused $1,500 in damage and injured one Lawrence-Douglas County firefighter.

A dog bit the firefighter who entered the home at 3323 Iowa. The firefighter was taken to the Lawrence Memorial Hospital for treatment of minor injuries and then released, Division Chief Joe Hoelscher said.

The fire was reported at 2:45 p.m. Saturday. The fire, which started in the bedroom, was unintentional, Hoelscher said. It was extinguished before it left the bedroom.

The dog and one cat were rescued. One cat is still unaccounted for. The family should be able to occupy the mobile home soon, Hoelscher said.
