Bill on cockfighting signed by governor

? Gov. Mark Parkinson signed a bill Thursday that will make cockfighting a felony in Kansas and strengthen laws against drug trafficking and assaulting law enforcement officers.

The changes will take effect July 1.

Current law makes cockfighting a misdemeanor, punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $2,500. As a felony, the presumed sentence will be probation, with up to six months in prison possible.

Another change in the legislation will mandate a prison sentence for someone convicted of battery against a law enforcement officer, if the officer is hurt. Current state law allows a sentence of up to 13 months in prison but presumes the offender will be put on probation.

Finally, the legislation lengthens prison sentences for drug traffickers if they have a firearm while trafficking. A trafficker will get an additional six months for possessing a firearm and an additional 18 months for discharging it.
