Wall says he’ll play for Kentucky

? John Wall, one of the nation’s most sought-after high school recruits, has decided to play for John Calipari and Kentucky.

The 6-foot-4 point guard from Word of God Christian Academy in Raleigh had been pursued by numerous schools including Duke, Kansas and Miami. But he has committed to play join Calipari and the Wildcats, according to several media reports.

In an interview with Scout.com on Tuesday morning, Wall said his relationship with Calipari put the Wildcats over the top. He’s part of a UK class that the recruiting site ranks as the nation’s best.

Word of God is planning a news conference for Wall to formally announce his decision today.

Wall was named The Associated Press men’s player of the year for North Carolina in March.

Even before Wall made his decision, Calipari’s first recruiting class at Kentucky included point guard Eric Bledsoe, forward DeMarcus Cousins and center Daniel Orton.

All-Southeastern Conference center Patrick Patterson also decided to withdraw his name from consideration for the NBA Draft and return to the Wildcats. Guard Jodie Meeks, the team’s leading scorer last year, hasn’t yet announced whether he will stay at Kentucky or remain in the draft.

Henderson signs with agent

Durham, N.C. — Duke’s Gerald Henderson has signed with an agent and will remain in the NBA Draft. The school said Tuesday the 6-foot-4 junior has signed with Arn Tellem, becoming the 10th player under coach Mike Krzyzewski to leave early for the NBA. Henderson entered his name in the draft shortly before last month’s deadline for underclassmen to declare.

Henderson was a third-team Associated Press All-American last season and led the Blue Devils with about 17 points per game. Duke reached the NCAA tournament’s round of 16 and won the Atlantic Coast Conference tournament title. Still, Duke will have four starters back from a 30-win team, including Kyle Singler and Jon Scheyer.

The NBA draft is June 25.

CBS, FOX deals extended

New York — The National Football League has extended its deals with broadcast partners CBS and FOX through the 2014 season.

“We are extremely pleased to extend this agreement as well as our successful partnership with the NFL, which continues to prove that NFL football is the premier property in all of sports and the number one-rated franchise in all of sports television,” president of CBS News and Sports Sean McManus said in a statement.

Fox will continue to televise NFC games and was awarded the rights to air the Super Bowl after the 2014 season.

New Orleans tapped for ’13

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — New Orleans is a Super Bowl city again. NFL owners voted Tuesday to play the 2013 Super Bowl in New Orleans, the first time the championship game will be played there since Hurricane Katrina shredded parts of the Louisiana Superdome. The hurricane caused 1,600 deaths and devastated the Gulf Coast four years ago.

New Orleans beat out Miami — which sought a record 11th Super Bowl — and 2008 host Glendale, Ariz., for the game. This is the 10th time New Orleans will be the site for the Super Bowl.

New Orleans last played host to the Super Bowl in 2002.

Goodell mulls Vick’s future

Fort Lauderdale, Fla. — NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has not determined the potential reinstatement process for Michael Vick, even as the former Atlanta Falcons star was about to leave federal prison for the final phase of his 23-month sentence related to dogfighting, Only this much is certain: Vick will need not only to say he’s sorry, but convince Goodell he means those words if there’s any chance his indefinite suspension will be lifted.

“I think that’s going to be up to Michael,” Goodell said Tuesday during a break at the NFL meetings.

Once Vick leaves the federal lockup in Leavenworth, Kan. — his release was expected sometime today — he will be confined much of the time to his Virginia home and wear an electronic monitoring device. He will be allowed to leave home for work at a $10-an-hour construction job, plus other court-approved events.

FSU receiver loses appeal

Tallahassee, Fla. — The NCAA has denied Florida State receiver Corey Surrency’s final appeal to play another year. The decision Tuesday upheld an April ruling. It means the senior, who played just one year at Florida State, has used up his eligibility.

Surrency transferred from El Camino Community College in California last summer. He lost a year of eligibility because he played for the Florida Kings — a South Florida semipro team — after he turned 21 and before he went to El Camino. Surrency caught 12 passes for 237 yards last season and tied for the team lead with four touchdown catches.
