Vinland teacher gets his job back

The Baldwin school board on Monday reversed its decision to let a Vinland Elementary School teacher go.

Matt McCune, a third-grade teacher, kept the job he’s held for three years. His supporters had come out in droves for the two April board meetings, including the April 27 meeting where seven district teachers were given notice of nonrenewal of their contracts, and they returned in force Monday.

The reason for the nonrenewals was what was feared to be a $1 million budget shortfall. That has since eased.

On Monday night, nearly a dozen parents and even more students told the school board how much they cared for McCune. The board voted 3-4 for nonrenewal of McCune’s contract, a switch from the 5-2 vote in late April.

McCune wasn’t the only VES teacher retained Monday night. Four other educators had been approved for notification of nonrenewal, but were not released. That was done because their contracts changed.
