U.S. says death toll ‘over-exaggerated’

May 9, 2009

— Video of the aftermath of a disputed incident involving American forces and the Taliban shows bloodied bodies of children laid out with other corpses, confirming international Red Cross findings at the two remote villages in western Afghanistan.

The U.S. military does not contest that civilians died but called “extremely over-exaggerated” a report by an Afghan official that as many as 147 were killed.

Afghans blame aerial bombing Monday and Tuesday for the deaths and destruction. President Hamid Karzai said the airstrikes were “not acceptable” and said the government estimated the number of civilian deaths to be 125 to 130, according to an interview with CNN on Friday.

“We cannot justify in any manner, for whatever number of Taliban, for whatever number of significantly important terrorists, the accidental or otherwise loss of civilians,” he was quoted as saying.

I'm pretty sure that the top level of the Obama regime didn't have anything to do with the orders on this attack. Just like under the Bush regime, the military did it on it's own. It's not "war crimes by the Obama administration." The only reason anyone with any sense would get into "heated debates over body counts over the past 5-6 years." is because the Iraq war should never have happened. Until the Obama regime invades a foreign country for no reason, then there is no comparison.

Obama's policy in Afghanistan is extremely flawed, mostly because he hasn't figured out how to get out out of the mess BushCo created. Same situation in Iraq.

But if he continues to think that he can escalate his way out of the mess in Afghanistan, this will become his mess, not BushCo's.

"Obama's policy in Afghanistan is extremely flawed,..."

Really, bozo? What exactly is Obama's 'policy' in Afghanistan and how is it 'extremely flawed'?

Better get used to that sorta headline. Apparently the Taliban have initiated a strategy of murdering scores of villagers and then pointing the finger at us or our allies. Also in the report out of Pakistan this morning stated the Taliban was blockading roads and not allowing civilians to escape battle territories in order to drive up body counts. The Pakistani army has supposedly moved into the Swat and is bent on taking back their country. Hopefully they stick to it.

Obama was "air raiding villages" as a part of this front of the war within a week of his inauguration in Pakistan. Obama is getting some of the Pallywood propaganda that everyone who has ever fought the Taliban or similar extremists have faced since the Russians were fighting them. Use the media to exaggerate actions of US.

If the Taliban were truly about fighting "honorable war" they claim they are fighting, they would quit taking innocent Muslims hostage and hiding among them to create these news stories. They fight like all guerilla fighters have done for centuries...dirty

It was already your long-held obsession, Tom. How can you be "leaning more toward it?"

beatrice 6 years, 6 months ago

Yes Tom, civilians die in wars, and yes, Obama is pushing harder in Afghanistan against the Taliban and Osama bin Laden than did the last administration, instead of continuing to look for Weapons of Mass Distruction in Iraq.

Nice of you to use the loss civilian lives to make your pathetic political point that you really really don't like Obama. Just remember that you are talking about actual people, and actual lives lost. Your taking some sick glee in their deaths is truly a new low even for you Tom.

I think Tommie's obsession is elsewhere - "Bristol, like her mother and younger sister, is a hottie. You know she's got 100 of those thingies coming at her at any given moment. Use a rubber next time, or at a mimimum coitus interruptus, Bristol. Get on the pill." I think 1/2 of Tommie's post's are his teen son, don't know which half though. Wow!

Don"t know Toms stance on gay rights, but I hope he is supportive of his son. He would appear the doting Dad.
