Crews extinguish west Lawrence apartment fire

Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical responded Friday night to a structure fire at Peppertree Apartments, 3113 West 22nd Street.

Crews were dispatched to the fire at 11:40 p.m. Friday and had the fire controlled by 12:11 a.m. Saturday. The fire was contained to one apartment on the south side of the complex, according to Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Battalion Chief Rob Kort.

The affected apartment sustained damage to its balcony, living room area and attic, Kort said.

Officials were still investigating the origin of the fire as of Sunday evening, but confirmed it started on the balcony and then entered the structure. The estimated damage to the building is $50,000. According to residents of the complex, flames were visible on the apartment’s balcony at one point before crews controlled the fire.

“We heard a bang at the door, and firemen were telling us to get out now,” said Ashley Lindsey, a resident of a neighboring apartment. “I made sure to get my kids and pets, and everybody’s safe.”

Seven trucks were dispatched to the scene in all, according to Kort.
