House postpones budget debate after GOP leaders acknowledge they don’t have votes to push bill through
Topeka ? The Kansas House has postponed a debate on a bill cutting $247 million in spending from the next state budget.
Republican leaders control a majority but acknowledged Wednesday that they don’t have enough support among GOP members to pass the measure.
Speaker Mike O’Neal, a Hutchinson Republican, said the debate would be delayed until Thursday.
The Republican-controlled Legislature and Democratic Gov. Mark Parkinson must close a projected $328 million deficit in the budget already approved for the fiscal year beginning July 1.
The Senate approved a bill Tuesday to make $138 million in cuts and enact some revenue-raising measures. But it still would leave a small deficit.
So would the House bill, which was endorsed Tuesday night by the chamber’s Appropriations Committee.
