Take a peek at the rebuilding in Greensburg

Ann and Bob Dixon were among the first to rebuild. When an F-5 tornado all but destroyed Greensburg two years ago today, the Dixons were grateful to have miraculously survived the total destruction of what had been their three-story, 100-year-old Victorian home. Seven months later, they moved into an energy-efficient, systems-built rancher, complete with a steel-reinforced safe room, built on the same lot.

“It was never a question for us. We felt people needed to see people coming back,” says Ann Dixon, a magistrate judge and wife of Greensburg’s mayor, of their decision to stay in Greensburg.

In keeping with the community’s initiative to become a model of sustainability, tornado survivors Jill and Scott Eller live across the street in a new split geodesic dome home made of SipSmart panels and designed by Michael Morley of Lawrence.

The Dixons, Ellers and their homes are featured on this week’s “Home and Away.”
