Walt Bickley said he regularly explains to baby boomers who stopped biking about 20 years ago that modern motorcycles are far different from those they used to ride.
The changes, such as the replacement of carburetors with fuel injection and chain drives with shaft and belt drive systems, make for far less maintenance, said the service and parts manager for Lawrence Yamaha, 1601 W. 23rd St., Lawrence.
With fuel injection, routine replacement of fuel filters is a thing of the past, Bickleys said. And because most motorcycles that people would take on a long trip are now equipped with belt drives or drive shafts, chain maintenance is no longer a consideration, he said.
However, there are still things bikers need to check or consider before taking a trip, Bickley said. Air filters still need to be cleaned or replaced when dirty or clogged, he said. And a smart motorcyclist would ensure that the universal on a drive shaft-equipped bike was properly lubricated, he said.
Of course, worn tires need to be replaced. And just like with cars and trucks, the correct air pressure is essential for proper handling and fuel economy, Bickley said.
“That’s one of the most neglected things I see here,” he said.
Bickley said batteries had far longer life spans than those of 15 to 20 years ago, but proper pre-trip maintenance will make them last longer. He recommended batteries be connected to a Deltran Battery Tender whenever the motorcycle was parked at home. The computerized charger available at all motorcycle shops keeps batteries charged to their maximum level without harmful overcharging, he said.
Riders should inspect helmets for any problems and replace or polish scratched face shields, Bickley said.
“I actually prepped my daughter for a trip,” he said. “You need a comfortable fitting jacket with nice fitting gloves and some type of sturdy footwear — motorcycle boots or boots are preferable.
“There have been so many changes in the motorcycle accessory industry. They now have shoes that are totally suitable.”
The revolution in gear has given motorcyclists many ways to travel comfortably, Bickley said.
“You can get electrically heated gloves, vests, socks and pants,” he said. “There’s complete and total communication with a passenger.”
