Lawrence Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to the First United Methodist Church, announces Scouts earning the “Citizenship In The Nation” merit badge. The Scouts attended a full-day class at Truman Library in Kansas City, Mo. At the class, the Scouts learned about the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the branches of government, federal and state relations, government functions, government finances, government facilities and national issues.

Prior to attending the class, the Scouts had to complete several prerequisites, including writing a letter to an elected official regarding a national issue, watching or reading the news for five days and discussing what they learned and choosing a national historical speech and discussing not only the importance of the speech but also the individual who wrote it. Scouts earning the badge were Thomas Peterson, Elias Schneck, Joseph Cary and Gavin Spence, with adults Kent Peterson and Brian Spence attending.


Troop 52 also conducted a Court of Honor on April 7. Scouts earning merit badges, special awards and advancing in rank are:

Eudora Boy Scout Troop 64, chartered to the Eudora Lions Club, participated in a campout April 24 at Tuttle Creek Reservoir, near Manhattan, and also attended a merit badge conference April 25 at Kansas State University. Scouts attending the campout were Andrew Briery, Connor Bradley, Nathan Bradley, Patrick Bradley, Simon Elwell, Nathan Gentleman, Matt Jones, Devon Middleton, Jonathan Morrison, Evhan Sours, Steven Wimmer and George Watts, with adults Jim Morrison, Jerry Criqui, John Scott, Duane Gentleman, Dan Sours, David Lewis, Jim Adams, Ann Wimmer and Tim Middleton. Adults also attending the conference were Karen Lewis, Amye Scott and Glenn Jackson.

Each Scout participated in two training courses with topics on aviation, nuclear science, weather, fire safety, fingerprinting, insect study, farm mechanics, engineering, drafting, American business, public speaking, chemistry, Scout basics and many others.
