Area resident to open winery outlet in Topeka

Greg Shipe, owner and operator of Davenport Orchards & Vineyards, 1394 E. 1900 Road, Eudora, will open a winery outlet at 11 a.m. Saturday in the original wine cellar of the historic Matrot Castle at 6424 S.W. Huntoon, in Topeka.

The outlet will be known as the Matrot Winery. Seraphin Matrot planted a 20-acre vineyard and built a home for his family to replicate his chateau in France.

The Castle and wine cellar were completed in 1883.

Initially the outlet will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays, with the intent to be open five to seven days a week as demand increases.

Patrons, 21 or over, will be able to sample and purchase the Matrot wine, a Norton variety, with a souvenir label featuring an artist’s rendering of the Matrot Castle.

Shipe will also have available for sampling and sale some of his 38 varieties of wine produced at the main winery in Eudora.
