Anderson to Memphis?

March 31, 2009

— University of Missouri officials want to increase basketball coach Mike Anderson’s $850,000 annual salary to at least $1 million and extend his contract for five more years.

“We want Mike Anderson to be at the University of Missouri for a very long time,” athletic director Mike Alden, who hired Anderson from Alabama-Birmingham in 2006 to replace Quin Snyder, said Monday night.

Anderson’s future could hinge on other coaching moves.

If John Calipari leaves Memphis for Kentucky, Memphis might target Anderson.

Alden denied reports from some Tennessee media that Memphis had sought his permission to talk to Anderson.

“Frankly, that flat-out never happened,” Alden said during the weekly Tiger Talk radio broadcast.

Yea, Memphis's attraction is mainly Calipari, and Missouri can probably match any offer Memphis can come up with.

But if Calipari stays in Memphis, Anderson might be a possibility for Kentucky.

All of this is just proof that MU is not a big-time program or a job that coaches will aspire to, but just a step on the way up (Anderson) or down (Snyder). Flash, meet pan.

Anderson at MU means a stronger MU, a stronger rivalry, and a stronger Big 12. That means a stronger KU. We should hope he stays.

MU really did not support Anderson or the team until the last 2 months. The previous 2+ years no one went to the games and there were whispers that he was going to be fired.

If Memphis or Georgia comes calling he should entertain the offers just to make sure that MU pays him top dollar.

As a Jayhawk fan I respect Coach Anderson and what he has done with Missouri and I actually found myself rooting for them in the tourny. However that being said I hope he goes to Memphis. The fact that they are going to pay him now in my opinion is a slap in the face. MIssouri runs its Basketball program like a mid-major and as long as they do that, coaches will leave for a bigger payday. They should have realized what they had before the season started rather than wait until he finally takes them deep in the tournament to pay him. Mizzou deserves what they get if he leaves.

I rooted for MU in the Tournament, too. Considering the horrible mess the program was last year, MU needed to wait to see if Anderson's program would hold up before offering a huge salary. They needed a little bit of proof of what he could do. He finally got the results he wanted from his efforts after three years and now he has proven his worth. There is no way he is going to leave the Big 12 for Conference USA. Coaches don't make downward moves professionally. Anderson might go to a school in another major conference but there is no way he's going to Memphis. Memphis can keep dreaming. But I really believe Mizzou will do whatever it takes to keep Anderson.

If Calipari leaves Memphis, the only way they get a top tier replacement is if they make a guarantee to move into a different conference. Conference USA is only about a 1/4 step above mid-major.

Calipari to Kentucky, 7 year deal for Anderson at Mizzou, Baylor's in the championship game for the NIT. Good day.
