Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Among projects expected to affect travel in Lawrence and the region during the coming week:

Lawrence

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth Street, near Queens Road, is closed to accommodate widening of the street. The right-turn lane for traffic headed into St. Margaret’s Episcopal Church also is closed, meaning through traffic should be aware of drivers slowing to turn into the church.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa Drive, is closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic headed north on Wakarusa, from just south of Sixth to a point just south of Overland Drive, also is squeezed to accommodate work related to construction in the area.

• The northbound lane of Massachusetts Street, from Ninth to 10th streets in downtown Lawrence, is scheduled to be closed this week for replacement of crosswalks. If the work has not started by Tuesday, the closure will be delayed until April 6, said Lisa Patterson, a city spokeswoman.

• Drivers may face brief periods of slow traffic as construction continues for a new U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa.

• City crews are scheduled to start crack-sealing work Monday on major roads in town. Such work will close several hundred feet of a single lane at a time, each closure lasting for a few hours. Among roads scheduled for work: Sixth, Massachusetts, Iowa, Louisiana and 19th streets, plus Clinton Parkway and various streets downtown. Work will continue through May.

• A section of East 902 Road, below the Clinton Lake dam, remains closed for resurfacing. The city’s Mutt Run Dog Park is closed, and access to Eagle Bend Golf Course is limited to traffic coming in from the south, on East 902 Road from south of the dam. The project is scheduled to last into mid-April.

U.S. Highway 69

• Drivers heading north on U.S. Highway 69 will find the left lane closed, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, from College Boulevard to Interstate 435 in Johnson County for pavement-patching and related work.

•The northbound U.S. 69 exit ramp from westbound 135th Street’s right two lanes will be closed from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday in Johnson County for utility work.

Turner Diagonal

• The northbound left lane of the Turner Diagonal will be closed at 65th Street in Leavenworth County from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday for installation of signs.

Interstate 35

• Traffic along Interstate 35 is limited to two lanes in each direction at the Lone Elm Road interchange in Olathe; limitations expected to be in place through late fall.

Interstate 435

• Traffic headed south on Interstate 435 is limited to two lanes crossing a bridge over the Missouri Pacific Railroad in Wyandotte County, about a third of a mile northeast of the interchange of I-435 and Kansas Highway 5/ North 93rd Street. Work is being conducted weekdays, during daylight hours, with occasional Saturday work. The project is scheduled for completion in late April.
