The Kansas Scholastic Chess Association announced its All-State Honors Chess Teams for the 2008-2009 season.

Teams earning All-State status, based on top 10 rankings, were: Central Junior High School in the middle school section; Cordley and Quail Run in the elementary section; and Quail Run in primary, K-3.

Individuals earning All-State Honors, top 20 rankings were:

High school division — Sam Stephens, Quail Run; and Alan Shi, Southwest Junior High School.

Middle school division — Aaron Simon, West Junior High School; Eddie Wilson, CJHS; Sam Beaulieu, CJHS; and Kaustubh Nimkar, Sunflower.

Elementary school division — Apramay Mishra, Sunflower; Josh Kallenbach, Quail Run; Jonathan Lesslie, Quail Run; and Ting-Ting Shi, Quail Run, in elementary division.


John Studdard has been reappointed as the Douglas County representative to the Kansas Silver Haired Legislature (KSHL), for 2009 through 2010.

The KSHL provides opportunities to identify concerns of Kansas senior citizens, develop bills and resolutions to address those concerns and present them to the Kansas Legislature and governor as recommendations for state policies.

Caleb W. Flory, Baldwin City, will exhibit Angus cattle at the 2009 Western Regional Junior Angus Show April 25-27, in Reno, Nev.

The show is sponsored by the American Angus Association and the Western States Angus Association.

Flory, a junior member of the American Angus Association, is one of 76 young Angus breeders who have entered a total of 176 head to compete for championship honors.

During February, students at four Lawrence schools collected spare change for Pennies for Patients to benefit The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.

Students at Bishop Seabury Academy raised $1,083; Sunflower School collected $1,275; South Junior High School raised $1,100; and Lawrence High School is still collecting.

This year the Mid-America Chapter hopes to raise $250,000 with the help of students at 425 local schools.

Funds raised will be used to support research, patient aid and education.

Last year, $19 million was raised in pennies and other spare change by more than 10 million elementary, middle and high school students nationwide.

Boston University announces area students named to its dean’s list for the fall 2008 semester and awarded academic degrees. Arielle Bremby, Lawrence, was named to the dean’s list, by earning a grade-point average of 3.40 to 3.47 with at least 12 completed credits. Michael Padget, Lawrence, earned a Master of Public Health degree in epidemiology. January graduates are invited to attend the ceremonies the weekend of May 15-17.
