Mizzou withstands Memphis rally

March 27, 2009

— A career night by J.T. Tiller put Missouri one win away from its first trip to the Final Four. Memphis’ 27-game winning streak, meanwhile, is history.

Tiller scored a career-high 23 points — 15 more than his season average — and Missouri held off Memphis’ frantic rally for a 102-91 victory Thursday night in the semifinals of the West Regional.

Third-seeded Missouri led by 24 points four minutes into the second half, then saw Memphis close within six with 2:14 to play. Mizzou put it away from the foul line.

Missouri (31-6) advanced to play top-seeded Connecticut for the West title on Saturday.

“We came out and kind of took the fight to Memphis early on, and before you know it, our guys had a little confidence,” Missouri coach Mike Anderson said.

Dynamic point guard Tyreke Evans scored 33 for second-seeded Memphis (33-4). Memphis shot only 18-for-32 from the foul line — last year, a poor showing at the foul line cost them dearly in an overtime championship game loss to Kansas.

Missouri freshman Marcus Denman had the game’s most jaw-dropping basket, a swish from three-quarters court at the halftime buzzer for a 13-point lead.

Tiller, the co-defensive player of the year in the Big 12, made 10-of-16 shots and had three steals. All five Missouri starters reached double figures. DeMarre Carroll scored 17 and Leo Lyons had 15 points and 12 rebounds.

Lyons was 11-for-18 from the foul line but made four straight in the final 11⁄2 minutes. In all, a whopping 77 free throws were taken, with Missouri making 30 of 45.

Robert Dozier had 19 points and 16 rebounds in Memphis’ first loss since a Dec. 20 setback against Syracuse. Antonio Anderson scored 18 in his last game for Memphis.

Missouri is among the last eight teams left in the NCAA Tournament in just its third season under Anderson, a Nolan Richardson disciple who coached the last Conference USA team to beat John Calipari’s Memphis team — that was for UAB 62 games ago.

This was Tigers vs. Tigers in a matchup not only of nicknames but in-your-face, high-energy styles.

“We kind of got punched in the mouth right from the beginning of the game,” Calipari said. “They broke us down defensively like we break people down. They beat us at our own game.”

WOW! What a great game by MIZZOU. They dismantled Memphis against all odds. And that last second shot at the half? What a highlights clip! MIZZOU has shown that they are not the "overrated" team some thought. They have also shown why MU Coach Anderson is deserving of the "Coach of the Year" award. Great job MU, hopefully KU and OU will keep up with you tonight!

Oh Bob, you crack me up! GO MIZZOU! Let's hope KU and OU keep up with MU tonight!

Mizzou fans were so excited, they didn't start chucking batteries at Memphis players until midway through the second half!

Good job, Tigers. Let's hope for 3 of four Big 12 schools in the final four. Then we can beat MU again!

So again, if Memphis had made free throws, the game might have turned out differently? We flipped back and forth between the Chicago Bulls game vs the Miami Heat. The announcer at one point said "derek rose looks at mario chalmers and thinks "you have my championship ring."'
Kirk Hinrich looked good, for the most part, until his T for arguing with the ref.

Just looked at Memphis' schedule this season. Unless I missed something, their record looked something like...33-4 overall. Pretty impressive. Record against teams that actually made the NCAA tournament (Including tourney games). 4-3. Hmmmmmm. I may not be a Mizzou fan by any means, but at least they played a respectable schedule throughout the year and didn't whine about their seeding. Sorry just had to get that off my chest (sigh)

I always root for all the Big12 teams (until they go up against Kansas) so our conference will gain respect. If we had four Big12 teams in the Final Four, that would be great (though not possible this year).

Or, MU can beat OU and KU again! But first, KU needs to get there! Die KU? No, Good luck KU!

Before you start talking about a final four match up and a "Guaranteed win for the Jayhawks." (Which mizzou obviously is not) maybe you should focus on Michigan St. who made KU look like a high school basketball team in the regular season and if they get by them then they still have to beat either Arizona (who also beat them in the regular season) or Louisville who if I'm not mistaken is the top #1 seed in the tournament so don't get too far ahead of yourself there Liberty

I think those jerseys that say "Mizzou" are ridiculous. I mean, what if KU wore jerseys that said "Kanz"? It was a good game, but I wish they would learn to spell their name right.

I cheered for MU then took a long shower and brushed my teeth twice.

At least "Mizzou" looks better than Kuck Fansas!

Two weeks ago everyone in town was bad mouthing the underachieving Jayhawks! Don't get cocky on the success of Mizzou, go out and win your own game! The Mizzou team that played last night would make cornish hen of The Jayhawks! I would welcome a rubber game, The Tigers are on fire! In reality maybe one Big XII team makes The Final Four. I ask you, who is peaking now? You think Memphis was a cake walk? Can you say BAYLOR?

tonymontana 9 years, 1 month ago

Still, it's suppoed to be spelled "Misery" on those jerseys.

"The Mizzou team that played last night would make cornish hen of The Jayhawks!"

Uh, the first time we played Mizzou we had an off night, Mizzou played a good game, and we lost by 2, on a last second shot. The second time we played Mizzou, we had a good game, Mizzou had a good game, and we won by 25.

Look, Mizzou played a good game last night, was so-so defensively, and would have been lucky to win if Memphis could hit a free throw. Good show and everything, but if you want people to believe in this team, you're gonna have to do better than Elite Eight every once in a ... ever.

Great big hairy win for the Tigers. This could be the year they finally make the Final Four, more power to 'em. That was ginormous on many fronts, BUT not if Anderson bolts after this year and now the Kentucky job is open. I gots a feeling he might be the top candidate right now, but if they make it to the last weekend? I mean, I'm no fan of the Tigers, but you gotta love that style of play and it's gotta be really attractive to starving UK fans.

'Member you heard it here first!

geniusmannumber1 (Anonymous) says… ...either your bias or ignorance is showing in your last statement. The game in which MU played at KU was NOT a good game on their part, perhaps the worst of the year right next to their loss at Nebraska. MU's win over KU at home was "average" at best, not their best showing of the year, not their worse. I guess we'll see tonight whether KU wins or loses. MU was 16-16 last year, look at how much they've improved from last year. KU on the other hand is on a downward trend, but hopefully will bounce back.

"Jaywalker" are absolutely right, it will be interesting to see if Anderson stays or not. MU has a very strong freshmen class, they would be well-served by Anderson staying.

elfth 9 years, 1 month ago

UK should mention Anderson as a possible choice. It's called the North Carolina move.

shotgun 9 years, 1 month ago

Not so "geniusmannumber1"

and would have been lucky to win if Memphis could hit a free throw. Kinda like last years championship?

Hey doofus, who said anything about expecting you to believe in Mizzou? I'm saying Mizzou is on fire now! It is well known that KU is basketball heaven! Why can't you "Beekers" show a little humility once in a while?

Jaywalker, Yeah, Yeah, all successful coaches follow the money trail. How long till T. Boone buys Bill Self?

Shotgun: I think I've seen quite a few posts on here giving congrats to Missouri. You're never going to get every KU fan to give you props even when you do well. Maybe focusing on those that are giving you credit would be better off than trying to spar with those that aren't?

I for one say good job on that game and the entire season for that matter. That doesn't make me a Missouri fan, but I can give credit where it's due.

"Why can't you “Beekers” show a little humility once in a while?"

With your posting history, shotgun, this comment just makes you a hypocrite. And very selective in what you choose to respond to, and apparently in what you choose to read in the first place.

Well "Original Bob", it's not MU that "died" in the "Sweet 16". "Liberty_One" "guaranteed win" for KU in the Final Four over MU. "Made_in_China" 3 out of 4 Big 12 Teams in the Final Four so that KU can beat MU again. No....KU lost in the "Sweet 16", even after having had a big lead. But they did their best, and that's what counts. Now we have OU and MU being the "Best of the Big 12" in the "Elite Eight". They might not get past that, but MU has shown it is one of the Top Two in the Big 12, good luck MU. OU has a better shot than MU, good luck OU!

jonas_opines 9 years, 1 month ago

Seriously, mukuoufan, why do you bother?
