Suspect in 2008 robbery and kidnapping case to make first court appearance

The man accused in a February 2008 robbery and kidnapping of a Lawrence woman is scheduled to have his first appearance Monday afternoon in Douglas County District Court.

According to the victim, the man approached her in the parking lot of Kohl’s, 3234 Iowa, forced her into her car at knifepoint, drove her to a bank at 27th and Iowa and forced her to withdraw money, police said. The incident occurred on Feb. 13, 2008.

The suspect fled on foot after leaving the bank, driving south on Iowa to County Road 458 and got out of the car between Wells Overlook and U.S. Highway 59, the woman told police. The victim was unharmed.

Douglas County Sheriff’s officers arrested the 41-year-old man Friday on charges of kidnapping and aggravated robbery. He has not been formally charged in court.

The man was convicted in Missouri for a similar incident, in which he was charged with trying to rob a woman in a Kansas City, Mo., shopping center parking lot, just hours after the Lawrence incident. He then led police on a high-speed chase.

The suspect received a more than 25-year prison sentence, according to Missouri Department of Corrections records.

He was transported to Douglas County on Friday.
