Basketball writers group gives Self national coach of the year award

March 23, 2009, 11:43 a.m. Updated March 23, 2009, 5:09 p.m.

The U.S. Basketball Writers Association today gave Bill Self its national coach of the year award.

The USBWA, in honoring Self, acknowledged that he "led Kansas to a Big 12 regular season title despite not having one starter return from last year’s national championship team."

The award for Self marks the second time a Kansas coach has been named national coach of the year by the USBWA. Roy Williams was honored in 1990 by the USBWA.

KU will face Michigan State in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Indianapolis.

Congrats, well deserved. Wish they had an award for coaching staffs. I'm sure the coach will say couldn't of done it without them. I'm also sure that Cole's and all of our previous bigs growth and games can probably be credited to coach Manning, our secret weapon in coaching and recruiting. Give us your tall boy, and we'll give you back a man capable of going pro.

elfth - No one is a bigger Danny fan than I am (I was a KU senior in 1988), but Self has succeded everywhere he has gone. Dragged ORU out of the pits; took Tulsa to the Elite 8; and made Illinois a national power. When he arrives the program moves up - when he leaves the program regresses. Self just knows how to create a winning staff and Danny is part of that. Thank goodness KU is a destination job.

Wait, I thought Bill Self was a hack coach who didn't know enough about basketball and that we deserved better. Posters here have said so, so it must be true.

Ok, waitin' for your PS3 rematch with MSU now. Gimme some good news 'cuz after watching our efforts this past weekend I'm fearful of another beat down by the Spartans.

But of course. Who better than our Self??

jaywalker: Sorry, but I've gotten too good at the game to be very good as a predictor anymore. My solo season Jayhawks are in the Sweet 16 as the #1 overall seed with a record of, I believe, 34-1. When I played MSU I won by 20.

That one is still UMass. inconcievable

My bracket, heretic that I am, has us losing the MSU, but I'm in 123rd place (though 14-16 for teams making it this far). After this the only Big 12 team still there according to me is OU.

I'll be happy to be proved wrong.

I should also note that my 3rd highest scorer is Conner Teahan, and 5th is frickin' Weasley. (Kleinmann)

Congrats again Coach Self in my opinion this year being BIG 12 regular season Champs and a Sweet 16 is another GREAT Rock Chalk Jayhawk year.

Now BEAT Michigan State Friday!!!!

It wasn't a destination job for Roy Williams.

Joel Hood 6 years, 8 months ago

Thank God it wasn't a destination job for Roy - we wouldn't have the 2008 title if he had stayed.

Bummer. I was hoping for divine inspiration. Blasphemer we may both be, though, as I too have us going down to MSU. I also have 14 of the 16, but Wake blew up one quadrant for me, had them going to the 8. I hope I'm wrong, of course, but I do think the Spartans are too strong for us. Though I will say, in every game that I expected us to go down this year the 'Hawks have pulled it out. Little, Taylor, Morris(s), Reed, or Morningstar - we have to have at least two contribute significantly AND keep the TO's under ten to have a shot. Go 'HAWKS!
