From the Lawrence Daily World for March 21, 1909: “Hippy Patterson who shot and killed Dune Walker here after a dice game argument was captured in Baldwin today and said, ‘I shot because I had to.’ He seemed cool and collected and said he would not discuss the murder until he could see an attorney. … Natural gas reportedly has been discovered at Tonganoxie and the Commercial Club in Lawrence has decided to investigate and make plans for drilling wells. … ‘The Doctrine of Sin’ was the subject by Dr. Hugh Black before an audience of several hundred today in university chapel. A long discussion period followed.”
