Wheel Genius: Road work this week

Among projects expected to affect travel in Lawrence and the region during the coming week:

Lawrence

• Work continues on The Oread, a hotel and mixed-use project just north of Kansas University’s main campus, and that means ongoing traffic restrictions through the end of the year: 12th Street closed to traffic headed west, from Oread Avenue to Indiana Street; and Indiana closed from 11th Street to 12th.

• The right lane for traffic headed west on Sixth, from Folks Road to the intersection with Wakarusa Drive, is closed for extension of an existing right-turn lane. Traffic headed north on Wakarusa, from just south of Sixth to a point just south of Overland Drive, also is squeezed to accommodate work on a new right-turn lane being added north of Sixth.

• Drivers may experience intermittent delays along U.S. Highway 59 between Lawrence and Ottawa because of ongoing adjacent highway construction.

Interstate 70

• The right lane will be closed to traffic headed west on Interstate 70 at the Polk-Quincy Viaduct Bridge in Shawnee County, from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday, for drain-cleaning work. The Second Street/Madison to westbound I-70 entrance ramp also will be closed during this time period.

Interstate 35

• Lanes will be closed for traffic headed north on Interstate 35 from U.S. Highway 56 in Gardner to U.S. Highway 169 in Olathe during overnight hours beginning at 10 p.m. Monday and continuing through 5 a.m. Tuesday. The closures are to accommodate work on a new bridge for an interchange at Lone Elm Road.

• Also in connection with the Lone Elm project: By afternoon rush hour on Tuesday, traffic on southbound I-35 will be switched to the northbound I-35 lanes, to accommodate construction work. That means northbound and southbound I-35 traffic will have two open lanes throughout late fall of 2009.

U.S. Highway 69

• The entrance ramp from eastbound College Boulevard to northbound U.S. Highway 69 in Johnson County is scheduled to be closed from 9 a.m. to noon Tuesday for pavement repairs. No marked detours will be provided. Drivers should expect minor delays and are advised to use alternate routes, said Kimberly Qualls, a spokeswoman for the Kansas Department of Transportation.

U.S. Highway 73

• U.S. Highway 73, or Fourth Street in Leavenworth, is scheduled to be closed to through traffic Monday, from Cherokee to Shawnee, so that crews can complete crosswalk repairs and handle other work. Traffic will be detoured one block east, to Third Street. Work is scheduled to be finished Monday.

Various

• Pavement repairs are scheduled to begin Monday in five counties: Jackson, Lyon, Shawnee, Riley and Wabaunsee. Multiple roads and highways are involved, and the work will require a variety of lane closures.
