From the Lawrence Daily World for March 7, 1909: “Still another electric line franchise effort was made last night to the city council, making at least the fourth such bid. Council members say they need to study the issues carefully before awarding a franchise to anyone, local or otherwise. … Golden weddings are celebrated quite often around Lawrence but it is seldom that a 60th anniversary is ever recorded. Today, Mr. and Mrs. Forest Savage, two of the oldest and most respected citizens of this town, held a 60th anniversary open house at their home at 1434 Conn. Both are feeble and the strain was apparent but there were many glows of happiness on the faces of those who attended. … Forest is 82 and Mrs. Savage 78. They met and married in the East and then came here after Forest visited in 1854 and decided this was the town where he wanted to settle. They fortunately were not bothered on their farm by the Quantrill raiders but lost many of their friends in town.”
