Area roundup: Tongie boys edge Holton

De Soto, Perry-Lecompton fall in semifinals

Perry — The Tonganoxie High boys basketball team is one win away from a Class 4A state tournament berth after defeating Holton (12-10), 63-54, in a sub-state semifinal Thursday night.

Up just three with less than three minutes to play, the Chieftains went on a 9-0 run to cement the victory.

Leading, 54-51, senior THS forward Jamie Everett hit junior Keaton Schaffer for a fast-break layup. After senior center Austin Smith hit one of two free throws at the 2:00 mark, Schaffer again scored a transition lay-in the next time down the floor, this time receiving a perfect pass from sophomore point guard Jeremy Carlisle.

Carlisle — capitalizing on a two-on-two break — set the table beautifully for Tonganoxie’s next basket with just more than a minute remaining, hitting a sprinting Smith in stride for a vicious, two-handed throw-down that put THS up 10 and extinguished any thoughts of a Holton comeback.

Schaffer, who led the Chieftains with 25 points, capped the run with a pair of free throws.

Tonganoxie (14-8) will face Basehor-Linwood on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. for a spot in the state tournament. The Chieftains have not been to state since 1984.

Perry — Richie O’Donnell had 15 points to lead Basehor-Linwood past Perry-Lecompton. Andy Bowman scored 23 to lead the Kaws.

Basehor-Linwood will face Tonganoxie at 7:30 p.m. Saturday for a spot in the state tournament. BLHS defeated THS, 81-59, at Basehor in the regular season.

St. James Academy 59, De Soto 48 (OT)

Eudora — Clint McCullogh scored 24 points and Joe Kelling added 14 to lead St. James over De Soto in the second-round of boys’ sub-state action at Eudora.

De Soto led, 37-29, going into the fourth quarter but several turnovers that resulted in St. James buckets got the Thunder back in the game.

In overtime, St. James hit 14 free throws to pull away. Jamel Townsend led De Soto with 20 points and 12 rebounds.

De Soto ended its season at 15-7. St. James (19-3) will play Sumner Academy in the sub-state championship at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Eudora.
