Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 3, 1909: The people here want the best paving in Kansas and they got some help when the city council passed two ordinances last night to get a lot of work done in east Lawrence. . . . An official from the Union Pacific was here today to discuss with local officials the flood control status and how it applies to any support UP might provide. . . . In an election full of surprises, George Kuhne was nominated for city treasurer on the Republican ticket over Harry Dick and E.D. O’Bryon by a plurality of 345 and a majority over both the candidates of 87. Mrs. Hattie Tibbals was nominated for treasurer of the school board by a majority of 298 over Mrs. E.W. Wright. W.H. Carruth received the nomination for mayor with a splendid total of 1,246 votes. Opponent S.D. Bishop could poll but 325 votes. . . . Bank guaranty legislation favorable to depositors has been passed in Topeka with the final compromise bill apparently satisfactory with bankers as well as potential customers.
