Old Home Town – 100 years ago

From the Lawrence Daily World for March 1, 1909: “Eighteen deputy assessors gathered this morning and got instructions for the taking of the tax assessment in Douglas County this year. The job will take about two months and they will again list all personal property. Only one class of real estate will be listed this year, large improvements made since the last assessments. . . . Outgoing President Theodore Roosevelt gave a farewell dinner to his ‘tennis cabinet,’ a group of associates who enjoy tennis while they discuss government affairs. . . . Floyd Lawrence, the popular register of deeds, had a narrow escape from death when he was overcome by gas fumes in his room at 907 Mass.”
