Point Lookout, Mo. Haskell Indian Nations University gave College of the Ozarks all it could handle. But the Indians dropped a 77-75 decision on Saturday in the championship game of the Midland College Athletic Conference women’s basketball tournament.
College of the Ozarks, 27-5 and ranked fourth nationally, rallied from three points down late to take a two-point lead. The Indians had the final possession, but Ozarks blocked Kortney Smith’s shot in the lane with five seconds remaining.
“We gave them all they could handle,” Haskell coach Phil Homeratha said. “It’s kind of disappointing, but I think the kids overachieved. It was a good year.”
Haskell finished 16-9.
“For us to have hung with them that long was a story in itself,” Homeratha said. “I think if it came down to one thing, it was that we had 17 turnovers and they had eight.”
But the Indians shot 53.1 percent from the field. Justina George Led Haskell with 19 points. And Smith, the Indians’ only senior, scored 18. Maria Parker scored 12 points before fouling out.
