Student safety

To the editor:

I am writing to you in regards to the no busing in Lawrence unless you live more than 2.5 miles away from school. My daughter is 7 years old and attends Quail Run School. I have driven all the main roads that I could think of, and they are all 2.5 or more miles away. I am a concerned parent on how to get my daughter to school safely. I have spoken with the First Student bus company, and to the gentleman that is heading this up at the school district. And even though they seem to care, they say there is nothing that they can do about it. It is because of a budget cut.

Well, I think budget cuts should come from somewhere else. My daughter would have to walk over 5 miles a day just to get to school, and cross a very busy intersection on Sixth Street. Who would be looking out for her safety? I’ve been told to check on carpooling! The parents that I have spoken with do not want to take on the responsibility.

I hope other parents will step up and speak out against this. There are several ways to cut budgets, but why is it always our children that must suffer for someone to take action?
