Raiders game washed out…again

The Lawrence Raiders wait outside the dugout after their game was rained out. The Raiders completed only two innings on Wednesday at Ice Field.

First came the Raiders of the Lost Ark. Now it’s the Raiders of Noah’s Ark.

Lawrence’s Legion baseball team was rained out again Wednesday night.

“It’s kind of annoying not getting to play,” first baseman Tanner Kilmer said after the Raiders’ fourth washout, all at Ice Field. “We joke about it, but we’re kind of mad.”

Actually, the Raiders have had five home dates called off after Tuesday’s scheduled doubleheader was canceled when the opponents begged out because of a short roster.

At least Wednesday’s game against the Topeka Stars began. The Raiders were leading, 1-0, with two outs in the top of the third inning when blasts of wind and then rain forced everyone at Holcom Complex to seek shelter.

The rain didn’t last long and Raiders coach Wilson Kilmer deemed the field playable, but with lightning still in the sky Kilmer and Stars coach Frank Magee decided against resumption 48 minutes after the stoppage.

Raiders’ right-hander Mitch Whitson had allowed only one hit, a ground single by former Lawrence High player Joe Kornbrust to lead off the second, but Kornbrust was thrown out trying to steal by catcher Brian Kindle.

Meanwhile, the Raiders scored their lone run without a hit in the first. Matthew Abel walked, moved to second when Travis Sanders was hit by a pitch, advanced to third on Nick Hassig’s sacrifice and scored on Kindle’s ground out.

The good news was that Whitson threw only 22 pitches and consequently will be available to work more innings in the upcoming Al Ice Woodbat Classic.

The Raiders will play four games in the next four days at KU’s Hoglund Ballpark, starting with today’s 7:30 p.m. meeting with Willard, Mo.

Unless, of course, one or more of the games are rained out.
