100 years ago: New lighting plan suggested

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 25, 1909: A new plan of city lighting is being suggested by Dayton people here to put in the electric line. Instead of one big arc light on the corner in business sections, the Dayton people would have five or six smaller lights in each block in the downtown. The plan seems likely to be adopted and will fit in better with the electric line power. . . . A notorious forger from Minnesota has been in our town of late and a $250 reward is offered for his capture, dead or alive. He has been operating here about two weeks, after coming from Bonner Springs, and police are eager for any information. . . . Three dollars and 50 cents will represent the total expenditure on 47 handsome gowns with lace garniture and trimmings to be worn by 47 girl graduates of the Wentworth public school in Chicago. They did all the work themselves with the aid of a sewing teacher. The work was done secretly and the first sighting of the parents will be at the graduation. . . . Sally B. Hardwick, who had lived here since 1854, died last night. She had seen the whole upbuilding of Lawrence. Her husband died 19 years ago.
