Douglas County commissioners interviewing familiar faces for appraiser’s job

Douglas County commissioners Wednesday afternoon were talking with two familiar faces during their search for the next county appraiser.

Commissioners are meeting in executive session to interview August Dettbarn and Steven Miles, two appraisal managers and longtime staffers in the Douglas County office.

Miles also was recently appointed to be interim appraiser until commissioners hire a permanent one to replace longtime appraiser Marion Johnson, who retired earlier this month after 18 years.

Commissioners last week said they would conduct interviews of two internal candidates and one external one.

But County Administrator Craig Weinaug confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the external candidate had asked to be removed from consideration. Weinaug said commissioners could still decide to interview more candidates later.

Commissioners have not given a timetable for when they will reach a final decision for the hire.
