Raiders return to diamond Tuesday night

Idle for the last 10 days, the Legion Raiders will resume their baseball schedule tonight.

The Raiders (5-9) will tangle with Maurer’s Athletics (12-7), a Kansas City-area traveling team, in a doubleheader at 6 p.m. at Ice Field.

Tonight’s twinbill will begin a stretch of seven games in six days for the Raiders who were rained out last Tuesday and weren’t scheduled over the weekend.

The Raiders will entertain the Topeka Stars in a single game on Wednesday before participating in the Al Ice Woodbat Classic Thursday through Sunday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Raiders’ coach Wilson Kilmer reports that Ryan Scott, who was projected as the club’s top pitcher, has been advised by doctors not to throw for the next six weeks because of a sore elbow. Scott, a 6-foot-4 right-hander, was the No. 1 starter for Free State High during the spring.

“We still plan to use him some as a pinch-runner,” Kilmer said.

If Scott, who also plays third base, is given medical clearance following the six-week period, he would be able to throw again in the Class AAA State Legion Tournament July 29-Aug. 2 in Pittsburg, assuming the Raiders advance through zone qualifying the week before.

Meanwhile, Kilmer is hoping catcher Adam Petz will be able to play in a couple of weeks. Petz, Free State High’s regular backstop in the spring, hasn’t suited for the Raiders because of a wrist injury.

“The wrist bothered him the last two or three weeks of Free State’s season,” Kilmer said. “When the season ended, he had it checked and they put it in a cast.”

With Petz out, Eudora High’s Brian Kindle and Austin Holladay, who played mainly in the outfield for Free State High, have been sharing the catching duties.
