25 years ago: Commissioner proposes storm water management system

City commissioner Nancy Shontz said that in view of the flooding problems in Lawrence the community would do well to develop a storm water management system that dealt with many of the local problems. She cited the Boulder, Colo., program as a good point of reference.

The Shontz appeal came on the heels of the extensive flooding in local lowlands after nearly six inches of rain had doused the locale in a short period of time. Many local streets had to be blocked and sufficient pumping equipment was not available.

The Watkins Community Museum was “cleaning out its attic” and hoped to auction off some of the items to raise money for a climate-controlled storage area in the 1887 brick building, once a major bank site, at 1047 Mass.

Representatives of six natural gas firms atended a pre-bid conference to seek data about Kansas University’s efforts to obtain lower-priced gas. Officials felt that lower rates were reachable via a bid system.
