Girls

Drue Davis – junior

Free State High

Davis was the 2009 Class 6A pole vault state champion and also finished fifth at state in the 100 (12.63). Her jump of 11 feet, 6 inches set a school record.

Kendal Abel – senior

Eudora High

Abel was named EHS’s female MVP for 2009. She set a school record in the javelin (121 feet), leapt 16 feet, 1 inch in the long jump and was a state qualifier in the 4×100 relay for the fourth straight year.

Whitney Demby – junior

Lawrence High

Demby easily was one of the most impressive city track athletes this season. In addition to finishing near the top of the hurdles and triple jump all season, she took seventh at state in the 100 hurdles (16.62) and ninth in the triple jump.

Katie Hirsch – junior

Perry-Lecompton

Hirsch turned in a couple of top eight showings at state for the Kaws this season, finishing fifth in the 1,600 (5:25) and eighth in the 800 (2:25).

Roni Grizzle – senior

Tonganoxie High

In addition to being one of the most dominant throwers in the area all season, Grizzle backed it up with a solid showing at Class 4A state. The Nebraska-bound senior was second in the shot put and third in the javelin.

JaBryanna Wellington – junior

Baldwin High

The BHS junior sprinter qualified for state in four events: 200, 400, 4×100 relay and 4×400 relay. The 4×400 relay finished second and set a school record.

Lyndsey Lober – sophomore

Baldwin High

Lober, who also qualified for state last season, took seventh in the 100 hurdles and ran a leg on the 4×400 relay team that finished second at state and set a school record.

Boys

Chebon Dawes – senior

Lawrence High

Dawes left this year’s Class 6A state meet in Wichita with a state title in the shot put (54) and a third-place finish in the discus (162-1).

Will Pendleton – senior

Lawrence High

The LHS senior went out with a bang, finishing second at state in the pole vault with a final jump of 13 feet, 6 inches.

Keene Niemack – junior

Free State High

Niemack brought home a third-place medal from the Class 6A state meet, finishing the 400 in 49.03. He also ran on the 4×400 relay team that won a medal at state.

Justin Ballock – junior

Eudora High

In addition to setting a school record in the high hurdles (14.8), Ballock won sixth and seventh-place medals at state and was named EHS’s male track MVP for 2009.

Joel Gantz – senior

Perry-Lecompton High

Gantz won his second straight Kaw Valley League title in the shot put with a personal best throw of 50-8 and qualified for state for the second year in a row. His throw of 51-11 took third place at state.

Connor Wright – senior

Baldwin High

Wright took second place at state and set a school record (1:56.45) in the 800. He also ran on the third-place 4×400 relay team and the fourth-place 4×800 relay team.

D.J. Lindsay – junior

Tonganoxie High

Lindsay took third in class 4A state in the 200 (22.1). He also ran on the state-championship 4×400 relay team (47.5 split) and was the Kaw Valley League Champion in the 200, 400 and 4×400 relay.
