25 years ago: Frenzy is on for Michael Jackson tickets

Michael Jackson concert mania hit Lawrence, to the tune of more than $31,200 in postal money orders for June 7-8-9 concerts in Kansas City’s Arrowhead Stadium. Postal officials here said they had been flooded after it was announced money orders would be required for tickets ahead of time. Towns throughout the area were affected by similar frenzies.

The city set a July 17 public hearing date on a request for $1.75 million in industrial revenue bonds for renovation of the Lawrence Opera House. Bowersock Ltd. was asking for the bonds. Attorney Lee Barnett .was spokesman for the group.

Despite heated objections from one of its members, the city commission took another step toward constructing a new erminal at Lawrence Municipal Airport. A lease agreement was the issue and approval came on a 3-2 vote with Nancy Shontz and MIke Amys dissenting. Shontz declared the matter not in the city’s best interests.
