Kansas specialties

Lawrence residents get to enjoy two of the “8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine” right here at home.

June 20, 2009

Congratulations to two Lawrence eateries that have been named among the “8 Wonders of Kansas Cuisine.”

It’s no surprise to local customers that the homegrown Free State Brewing Co., 636 Mass., and WheatFields Bakery and Cafe, 904 Vt., earned top honors in a contest sponsored by the Kansas Sampler Foundation.

The foundation, which promotes Kansas culture and tourism, said the contest was intended to find “the most iconic restaurants in Kansas.” The list certainly included names that are well known to people who have eaten their way across the state: Bobo’s Drive-In, Topeka; Brookville Hotel, Abilene; Cozy Inn, Salina; Crawford County Fried Chicken (a group of six restaurants, including Chicken Annie’s and Chicken Mary’s); Guy and Mae’s Tavern, Williamsburg; and the Hays House, Council Grove.

People familiar with those restaurants and their menu specialties might give the Lawrence restaurants the added distinction of being the “healthy choice,” but all of the restaurants have a loyal following and deserve to represent “Kansas Cuisine.”

Happy eating!
