Territorial Days celebration planned for this month

? The annual Historic LeCompton Territorial Days celebration will be June 26-27.

The days are set aside to recognize the impact Lecompton had on Kansas as the territorial capital from 1855 to 1861 and the home of nine territorial governors.

Highlights of the celebration will include a re-enactment of the pre-Civil War Battle of Fort Titus, the play “Bleeding Kansas” and pioneer skills demonstrations.

The Battle of Fort Titus was on August 16, 1856 and was the first battle between free state and pro-slavery forces in which there were casualties. Three people were killed and 14 injured.

In 1857, the Lecompton Constitution was written and sparked a chain of events that divided the nation and led to the Civil War.
