25 years ago: Blacksmith displays skills

Jim Kanthak of DeSoto was getting all the business he could handle in his rare job of blacksmith (farrier) as he took care of all the animals in town for the Sunflower Benefit Horse Show.

In the primary battle for the Democratic nomination for Douglas County district attorney, the first punch was thrown. Incumbent Jerry Harper filed an objection with the secretary of state challenging the candidacy of party foe Mike Glover, current Lawrence city prosecutor. Harper, 43, said Glover, 36, had not been an official practicing attorney for the five years needed to quality to run for district attorney. Glover declared that Harper was wrong and cited a 1928 Kansas Supreme Court decision to validate his claim to candidacy.

More flooding was predicted, particularly in the Stranger Creek region, as overnight storms dropped another three to four inches of rain on already soggy and water-swollen landscapes. Lawrence was not hurt so far.
