100 years ago: Lawrence bride weds NYC news manager

From the Lawrence Daily World for June 15, 1909: An unusually romantic wedding in which Lawrence people will be greatly interested was that of Margaret Rohe of Lawrence to Roy Howard of New York City, general news manager of the United Press Assn. The marriage occurred in London. Miss Rohe went to England the past April with a prominent part in “The Chorus Lady,” a most successful production. She had met Howard in New York and that led to the marriage in London. They will tour the continent before returning to New York. . . . President Taft today named Robert Valentine as the new commissioner of Indian affairs. It had been thought that H.B. Peairs of Haskell Institute might get the job. Valentine was to have been here for the 25th Haskell Institute birthday but his appointment by the presidant changed that. . . . The Haskell celebration continues and it is proving to be one of the most inspiring events in the school’s history. Peairs does not seem displeased to be staying here. . . . Property rights are being negotiated for the interurban routes between here and Topeka.
