Police searching for suspects in early morning robberies

June 13, 2009, 5:42 a.m. Updated June 14, 2009, 12:52 a.m.

Lawrence police are searching for suspects in three robbery cases that all occurred around 2 a.m. Saturday in Oread neighborhood.

Lawrence Police Sgt. Susan Hadl said two 21-year-old KU students were walking home from a bar in the 1400 block of Ohio Street around 2 a.m. Saturday when they were accosted in a parking lot of Emery Place apartments, 1419 Ohio. The victims described two suspects, both black males approximately 6 feet tall and wearing dark clothing and jeans.

While they were not certain of a weapon being involved, the victims said the suspects came at them from behind and feigned weapons at their heads, demanding money. The students relinquished an undisclosed amount of money and the robbers then fled eastbound and possibly north.

A similar incident occurred around 1:50 a.m. in a parking lot at 14th Street and Alumni Place where a delivery driver was approached by two suspects, said Capt. Schuyler Bailey with Kansas University Public Safety.

One of the men hit the driver before taking his money. No weapons were involved, Bailey said.

The suspects were two black males in their mid-20s, around 6 feet tall and weighing 180 pounds. Both were wearing dark clothing.

Another robbery occurred around 1:45 a.m. in the 1300 block of Ohio Street. Four black males reportedly approached a man with a knife and took money from the man’s wallet. The victim was unharmed, Lawrence Police Sgt. Dave Hubbel said.

Saturday’s robberies came a week after a 27-year-old man was robbed while walking in a downtown alley between 12:30 a.m. and 1 a.m. The suspects had a handgun and demanded that the victim hand over his wallet.

Another early Saturday morning robbery involving a semi-automatic handgun was reported in the 1000 block of Mississippi Street on May 16. And a month before, a woman reported having her purse stolen by four men in the 1200 block of Ohio Street.

Didn't know Jimmy Johns was still delivering at 2 a.m. I'll have to remember that.

Glad we're moving away from Lawrence after 17 years here. This town has definitely gone downhill in recent years, and I don't see it stopping. It's not just the crime either. What was once a very nice city has turned into thugville.

maxcrabb 8 years, 11 months ago

There's nothing like the internet to shatter the delusional assumption that Lawrence was once a town with no crime.

Did they call Lawrence Thugville when Quantrail came and raped and pillaged?

It takes a special kind of moron to spin a old-fashioned robbery into a political jab at a government official that has nothing to do with this article. I dare you to try to keep your political commentary to relevant articles. I'm willing to bet you voted for Bush, twice, so if anybody needs to be told to be careful with their vote it is most certainly you.

lawrenceguy40. Yeah, I yearn for those days under W when there was no crime.

How in the world did this become Obama's fault?? How delusional does it get??!

This is for Marlboro_Man2,

I thought your comment at 7:58 was kind of funny but when you added the comment about the chicken thing at 11:22, Well I lost respect for you as I am sure you don't care but just to let you know you kind of crossed a line. You should probably keep racist comments like that to your self or start a Website for Racist and Hate Crime fans!

mommyoffour 8 years, 11 months ago

Wow and more ignorant people as I was writing my post. And you guys are worried about thugs? Maybe we should be more worried that Lawrence has Racist still. Wow I am so suprised and had no idea that these kind of people were still around. I dont like robbers and people that commit crimes but I do have bi racial children and two of them are boys. I would hate to see how you steriotype my sons if you seen them out. Even though one is in college and the other one is 10yrs old. They are both fine young men that were brought up correctly and believe that they should have the respect that the next person has! I hope they never run into people like you all that still act like asses!

lawrenceguy40: have you actually been to Europe? It's far safer there than it is here. Maybe because the "socialists" provide adequate funding for police departments? Also, it's not as though crime suddenly started occurring in Lawrence when Barack Obama (not "Barry O" as you so disrespectfully state) became President.

The legal system is weak in Lawrence, and the criminals know it. They all talk and word gets around fast.

The DA was well known with the criminals and got many guilty ones an easy ride or got them off when he was a criminal lawyer. Appears he still is giving them a cake walk as DA. Just look at the facts on the "Douglas County Sheriff's" web site.

On nine out of ten arrest, the DA does not file charges and the thugs back on the street with in hours telling his criminal buddies about his arrest and how no charges were filed.

However, in defense of his position, I have learned that the state law gives the DA five years to file charges in most criminal cases. The trouble with a system like this is that it does not deter crime it only drags it out with little deterrent for the criminals. No court ordered treatment or jail time for up to 5 years.

Its a cake walk, and this is lying to the public about the crime rate because the conviction rate is small and belated sometime in the future compared to the actual crimes being committed against the public.

It seems like every weekend there are robberies downtown and in this neighborhood. Is the LPD planning on trying to stop these or do they not matter since they're usually drunk college kids? I should be able to stumble home without worrying about being mugged.

LarryNative, Your use of the word spade in reference to black people is disgusting at worst and an ignorant word choice at best. Grow up.

kawvalleybulldog 8 years, 11 months ago

These boys need to start standing up for themselves. Tell you what, keep a knife in your pocket and next time some wanna-be gangsters approach demanding your money- pull out that knife instead and stick it in their face. Isn't it common knowledge that these gangster-robber types are as easily scared and spooky as they come?

A better question: what makes the rightwing so stupid?

Same thing that makes liberal stupid...

Elections and power.

"lawrenceguy40 (Anonymous) says…

This is totally relevant. BHO's basic philosophy is that the state will rob from those that work hard and have, and give to those that don't work and haven't! This gives people a false sense of entitlement. When they don't get what they are told they have a right to, they will go and get it themselves."

Yeah, I yearn for the days when we knew who was raping and robbing us (corporate America, insurance companies, etc.) and we couldn't do a damn thing about it 'cause they were buds with the party in power (R). NOT!

Such easy pickings for ft hays and KSU. Send your kid here they will not be stuck up.

Graczyk 8 years, 11 months ago

LarryNative, Times change. So do the way words are used. You would never use that expression in the same context if you were in a workplace.
