Officials at the Lawrence Stokely-Van Camp food processing plant announced the plant would close Sept. 30. Bought the past Septemer by Quaker Oats Co., the operation employed 124 people, 20 of whom were immediately laid off. John Rafferty of Quaker said the program would not affect the local Quaker Oats Co. pet foods division plant at 700 N. Iowa. Plans for the property were not announced.

Local Democrats created four local primary races with late filings. The party seemed to be coming on stronger although voter rolls showed 11,578 registered Republicans and 7,588 Democrats. David Berkowitz was county Demo chairman while Andy Galyardt was his GOP counterpart.

Easterners got a brief break from intense heat that had killed at least 10 while the Midlands continued to be hit by tornadoes and heavy rains leading to a good deal of localized flooding.

Requests for 1983 revenue sharing in Lawrence were up more than $1 million over the bids for the previous year. However, the city was expecting only about $687,000 in funding and it appeared many would have to be denied.

Only one resident attended the annual hearing on the city budget.
