Old Home Town – 25 years ago

The weekend air show at the Lawrence Municipal Airport had proved to be a major attraction. Especially popular were the aerobatics performers. Huge crowds turned out.

A threat of flooding on the Kaw River caused the evacuation of a small residential area east of Eudora but no major damage occurred. The river was now dropping and the residents had been able to return home. The Kaw was near the 18-foot flood stage at Lawrence due to recent heavy rains but the water gates were shut at Perry Lake to cut down on a severe crest.

An experimental Army missile scored what was believed to be the world’s first successful intercept of an oncoming ballistic warhead. Pentagon officials were delighted with the results of the experiment.

Mike Glover, Martha Parker, Deborah Sampson and Lawrence Seaman were the late filees for elective posts. Several interesting races were shaping up, including the county commission, district attorney and county treasurer posts.
